Ross + Kramer is pleased to announce Sideways, a group exhibition of works by Chloe Chiasson, NH DePass, Gustav Hamilton, and Joyce Pensato, opening on September 5th, 2024 at the gallery’s New York location.
The exhibition includes exclusively horizontal paintings, examining how these four artists engage with the orientation not merely as a format, but as a critical conceptual framework. Each artist utilizes distinct techniques experimenting with scale, depth, perspective, and dimensionality to create highly impactful, emotive pieces. When brought into conversation with one another, these works are united by their shared familiar perspective and invite the audience to contemplate how horizontal orientation parallels our quotidian visual experiences.

NH DePass (b.1990, New Orleans, LA) is an artist whose work explores a tension between craft and digital innovation. DePass uses classical techniques like hand sewing and carpentry while incorporating digitally rendered reference materials to create works that disturb historical and cultural timelines. He has exhibited nationally and internationally at The Pit (Los Angeles, CA); Public Gallery (London, UK), GYNP Gallery (Berlin, Germany), the Ogden Museum of Southern Art (New Orleans, LA), and Ross+Kramer (New York, NY), amongst others. Gustav Hamilton (b. 1990, Everett, WA) was raised in Fargo, North Dakota and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. In his work, Hamilton explores the importance of objects in relation to the stories we tell about who we are and what we have experienced and accomplished. He received his BFA from the University of Montana (2013) and his MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (2016). Hamilton has exhibited at Zoe Fisher Projects (New York, NY); Fisher Parrish Gallery (New York, NY); Ross + Kramer Gallery (New York, NY); David B. Joyce Pensato (b.1941-2019, Brooklyn, New York) lived and worked in Brooklyn, NY and studied at the New York Studio School. Pensato is known for her large-scale lively cartoon characters that marry abstract expressionism and pop culture through a frenzied technique—involving quickly layered gestures and a sharp black and white palette. Her work has been exhibited widely, including solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Chicago; Kunstraum Innsbruck, Innsbruck; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Fort Worth; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Santa Monica Museum of Art, Santa Monica; and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Saint Louis.
